Both of them sound very good but not a lot alike. As to how it compares to a vintage Gibson lap steel, my main guitar is a Supro Twin equipped with Gibson P-90's and to me, the biggest difference is the Oahu sounds like a lap steel (an awesome one!) and the P-90's sound like a console steel. I have used it in a variety of tunings and with a range of string gauges to match. It's sound is very mid-range but quite controllable. My Diana is also the loudest electric guitar I have ever encountered. These Diana pickups were made by Valco and are like the ultimate, high end version made out of better materials. *Comments from another owner: I have owned and operated a similar '52 Diana for a couple of decades now. It is equipped with a screw-on connector & also comes with a cord. You can go from country twang to Southern blues to Hawaiian or anything beyond. I’ve run this guitar through combinations of effects and duplicated some of the sounds he created, only on a slide guitar. Jimi Hendrix played a Strat with single coil pickups and AlNiCo magnets. It’s a particularly powerful well balanced pickup. We recently sold another Oahu Diana with this same model pickup and the new owner chose it particularly for the signal translation of the pickup.

If I wanted to rob one of these pickups for another guitar, I’d choose a junker. The finish has the character only age can lend. This one is in better condition than most. Be that as it may the pickup is fine, but I prefer leaving it in this guitar. Peter Green reversed the polarity in some for some of his early FM recordings. Ry Cooder used them in his Coodercasters. Some players I know have told me they value the pickup in these guitars more than the rest of the guitar. I highly recommend checking out his CDs & YouTube videos. A Diana was the lap steel of choice for one of my favorite artists, Lance Harrison. Such good lap steels that Goldtone uses them as a model for their lap steels. The longer than normal scale length of 25" gives it more range than conventional lap steels. We consider this model a sleeper particularly with the Supro string-through pickup.

Those in the know find these lap steels to be outstanding. Because we rate these so well, we’ve had dozens of this model. This certainly is a beautifully executed guitar.
